The launch of the Matjiesfontein Nursery & Herb Garden project recently took place at the Matjiesfontein Club House, a day filled with fun and festivities. Among the dignitaries who attended the event included town Mayor, Mr Wilhelm Theron, Municipal Manager, Mr Pietie Williams, National Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) Provincial Manager, Mr Joseph Bruintjies, and the implementing agents (Anix Consulting) CEO, Mr Rhiyaan Cupido.

Ms Barbra Brown from DEA led the programme, and started the proceedings with a moment of silence for the passing of two of the project beneficiary’s family members, thereafter local Community Development Worker, Mr. Oersen Herder welcomed all to Matjiesfontein.

The day kicked off with the soccer where Yellowbirds went against the Red Devils and for the netball, Rooi Rissies against the Blomkool’s, the teams are named after some of the plants that will be in the nursery garden that is under construction. A potjiekos competition was also held where the beneficiaries got a chance to show off their culinary skills to the eager judges.

The community was addressed by the dignitaries and sharing the stage with the town Mayor, Anix CEO, Rhiyaan Cupido in his address spoke to the bond that has been formed by the group and the recognizable difference in the morale of the project beneficiaries and thanked them for the work they are doing in the community. Mr Theron ended the formalities quoting that, ‘n leier vat jou waar jy wil wees maar ‘n goeie leier vat jou waar jy moet wees.’

Prizes were then handed out to the jubilant teams, the Yellowbirds for the soccer, the Rooi Rissies for the netball and Ellelien Nel hailed as Netta Nortje from the soapie 7de Laan who won the potjiekos competition.

The day culminated with a heartfelt thank you from local councillor, Margaret Bobajee and all were treated to a light lunch.
