Cederberg Donkey Cart Adventures

The Cederberg Donkey Cart Route is a Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) funded project. This entailed the development of a three day tour through the Cederberg mountain area and Heuningvlei, and a donkey trek route through Heuningvlei with accommodation facilities for overnight visitors.

The aim of the project is to operate a community based bed and breakfast operation, catering for international and domestic tourists. The community will be involved in providing catering and cleaning services as well as operating a donkey-carriage ride facility. Furthermore the project will aid in promoting tourism in the Cederberg area, and ultimately assist in the community’s development and alleviate poverty, thus creating sustainability for the community of Heuningvlei.
An old vacant school was revamped into a backpacker’s accommodation facility.Kleinvlei_camp_12 A tea garden was built and located in the village, and a nursery was erected to plant and cultivate rooibos tea and medicinal herbs. Included in the project was the upgrading of the donkey carts and construction of a kiosk and parking at Pakhuis Pass.

These facilities have been completed and launched, and Anix has been appointed an extension to the above mentioned project. Phase 2 of the project will entail providing an upgrade to the trail by expanding and adding on to the existing infrastructure. The hiking trail will be extended from Heuningvlei, with an overnight camping site in Kleinvlei, all the way to Wupperthal, where upgrades to the visitor information center will be done.
